Abdicate

The other night you dreamed
Of a bird trapped in a bottle
Later you described tail feathers
The yellowish stir of Mum petals
The bird pecked at the green bottle
And a single searching eye
Followed you distorted by glass

The heart is trapped too
A second life inside us
That if released
Would hasten away
We think of it
As holding claim to love
But it’s simply the organ that beats

From any mountain top
The land below appears
Pressed flat so that
All life slows to a crawl

You’ll never dream again
Of that bird nor will I
But you did once
And I love you for that
